DEATH AT A MARRIAGE FEAST.

 

Mrs. Elizabeth James, a widow, aged 52 of Greenfleld-road, Tottenham, London, was a guest recently at a wedding in Braemar-road, Tottenham. The bride's mother found her resting nor head on the table. She said she was unwell. After being taken into the garden she died. The festivities were then abandoned. At the inquest the doctor ascribed death to heart disease, and the jury returned a verdict to that effect.

CHILDS HANDS CUT OFF

 

Sentence of penal servitude for life was passed at Manchester Assizes on John Whalley, 32 years, fitter, of Accrington, Lancashire, for cutting off his step-daughter's hands. Whalley married Mrs. Wildman, a widow, two years ago. Their married life was unhappy.

After a violent quarrel on September 17 his wife left, taking her little daughter. He took the child from school next day, cut off her hands in his room, and was found in the back kitchen with a rubber gas tube in his mouth. He told the doctor he wanted to get at the mother through the child. Mr. Justice Branson described the crime as a cold, calculated, and fiendish attempt to be avenged upon the wife. It was the most horrible story he had ever listened to. Mr. E. Wooll, for the prosecution, said that £6000 had been publicly subscribed for the little girl, a tribute, be added, to the warmhearted sympathy with innocent childhood.

Cheap Labour

An application for certificate of expenditure from Sarah Freestone, for ringbarking 500 acres on grazing farm 142, at 1s. per acre, was granted.

Past laws

At Dunstable, Mass., in 1651, dancing atweddings was forbidden, and in 1660, William Walker was imprisoned a month for courting amaid without the leave of her parents. In 1675, the wearing of long hair, and ribbons to tie it up, were prohibited by severe penalties.

Train accident, Toowoomba

TOOWOOMBA, April 13.

Early this morning a serious accident occurredon the Main Range to John Davey, a lengthsman.

The early up goods train, on reaching the big ironbridge near Harlaxtoton, ran over Davies, taking his leg clean off, and the engine was turned off the road. It appears that Davies, while returning home from duty, lost his way, and it being misty on the ranges, he fell over the embankment on to the line, and lost consciousness, and remained there until the train passed over him. The engine, which was derailed, was subsequently got on the line, and carne to Toowoomba. The accident caused some delay in the later trains.

DRUNKENNESS.

An elderly man, rejoicing in the somewhat extraordinary name of Sixsmith,

pleaded guilty to having been drunk and

disorderly in the public streets. He

was arrested by Constable Dobbyn, and, to

the Bench, stated that he had just arrived

from Sydney by steamer, and that meeting

with a few good-natured Mount Morganites,

took "jist a glass or two, yer washup, and

got knocked a cock." The half-dozen Smith

was directed to pay a fine of 5s, or, in default, repose in the cells for a period of 24 hours.

Marriage of convenience ??

Burglary and Assault. — Thomas Robinson was brought up on Wednesday on remand, charged with having broken into the house of Mary Ann Wakefield, and assaulting her with intent to commit rape. The further evidence adduced was not of a satisfactory nature, and the case was dismissed.

MARRIAGE A LA MODE. —On Thursday, T. Robinson appeared upon bail to answer the charge of having broken into the house of Mary Ann Wakefield, and assaulting her with intent. Mr. Bellas, who appeared for defendant, said that the parties were married, and as the wife could not appear against the husband, he asked his Worship that his client might be discharged. Mrs. Robinson was in Court, and it was not until we heard Mr. Bellas that we were enabled to account for the smiling faces of those who, we were under the belief, occupied the antagonistic positions of prosecutor and defendant. We know that generally speaking an amount of Courting is accomplished before marriage, but in this case it appears to have been almost entirely on the side of the bridegroom.
